RAISING OUR CHILDREN AND YOUTH IN A SCARY WORLD: FIVE STRATEGIES FOR PARENTS AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT SYSTEMS

The Kilgore Group offers a one-day workshop, “Raising Our Children and Youth in a Scary World: Five Strategies for Parents and Community Support Systems,” to organizations such as schools (PTSA’s), hospitals, non-profit organizations, and corporations as an employee benefit.

Statistics for suicide, school crime, gang involvement, substance abuse, school dropouts, and many other health and safety issues send chills down the backs of parents. The goal of this workshop is to provide essential knowledge and skills that will enable parents to help their children remain safe, succeed in school, and become strong, mature young adults.

Parents will learn how to measure children’s pro-social and anti-social attitudes and associates and areas to focus on to influence peer pressure. The development of a positive “personal belief system” – the foundation for the way youth manage their lives - and how to change unhealthy beliefs, values and attitudes is addressed. The workshop emphasizes that a child’s capacity for resilience, the ability to “bounce back” from adversity, and the ability to choose a “self-correcting path,” is heavily dependent on the positive or negative way in which the youth views his or her “life story.” Parents will learn how to inspire a life story that will build the critical power of resilience in their child.

During adolescence and the teenage years youth push for independence. Parents will learn how to use a “coach approach” during these years that will help their children navigate the transition to mature, responsible young adults. Parents will leave the workshop with a personal plan of action that will allow them to apply what they have learned to help their children grow up successfully in a challenging world. One stated goal of the workshop is that parents will leave the workshop “slightly” different people, needing only to practice new skills and tools to develop a more effective relationship with their children or the children with whom they work.
